Plant Fibre Blend: what a blend label has to show

A blend is several ingredients on one label. How to read the order, the proportions and the fibre per portion.

A blend is a list, not an ingredient

The word blend tells you there is more than one fibre in the pouch. The ingredients list tells you which ones, and it is written in descending order of weight.

That order is the most useful thing on a blend label. The first name is the largest part of what you are buying.

Proportions may not be given

Descending order is required, but a percentage for each ingredient is not always printed. A blend can therefore be mostly its first ingredient or close to evenly split, and the list alone will not say which.

Where percentages are shown, use them. Where they are not, treat the blend as one product rather than as a set of ingredients you can weigh up individually.

  • Ingredients in descending order of weight
  • Any percentage declarations, where the label gives them
  • Which named fibres are present, since each has its own label conventions

Total fibre per portion is the comparison figure

Nutrition information states fibre against the stated portion for the blend as a whole. That single figure is what makes a blend comparable with a single fibre powder.

Blend against single ingredient

A single fibre pouch lets you read one ingredient and one set of directions. A blend trades that clarity for a mix you cannot take apart.

Neither is better on a label alone. The choice is between knowing exactly what one ingredient is and accepting a combination described as a whole.

Directions are specific to the blend

A blend has its own mixing and liquid instructions from the manufacturer, and they are not borrowed from any single fibre inside it. Use the directions printed on this pouch only.

What the label tells you

The full ingredients list, the amount per portion, allergens, dietary suitability, directions and storage are printed on the pack.

Read the label before you take any supplement, and check the product page for the format, pack size and price before you buy.
