Bovine Collagen Powder: how to compare one pouch with another
A 300 g bovine collagen pouch, read properly: cattle source, dietary suitability and the stated portion.
Bovine means cattle derived
Bovine collagen comes from cattle. Unlike the marine version it does not carry a fish declaration, but it is still an animal ingredient and the ingredients list remains the only authority on what is in the pouch.
Suitability is a different question from allergens
Cattle derived powder is neither vegan nor vegetarian. That is a suitability point rather than an allergen point, and the two are listed in different places on a label.
Allergens appear emphasised inside the ingredients list. Suitability statements, where a brand makes them, sit separately and should be verifiable.
- Not vegan, not vegetarian, because the source is an animal
- No fish declaration expected, which is the clearest difference from marine
- Any gluten free or dairy free wording needs to be a confirmed statement, not an assumption
Why the pouch weight misleads
Two 300 g pouches can contain very different amounts of collagen per portion. Weight describes the pack, while the per portion figure describes what you are actually comparing.
If a pouch advertises its size more loudly than its stated portion, you have been given the less useful number.
Marine or bovine, side by side
Both are animal sourced and neither suits a plant based diet. The practical difference for most shoppers is the allergen declaration and the price per pouch.
- Marine: fish derived, carries a declarable fish allergen
- Bovine: cattle derived, no fish declaration
- Neither can be compared with a capsule pack by count, only by the amount stated per portion
An unflavoured powder has a short list
Unflavoured means there should be very little besides the collagen itself. Read the whole list anyway, because anti caking agents, flavourings and sweeteners all have to be declared if they are present.
What the label tells you
The full ingredients list, the amount per portion, allergens, dietary suitability, directions and storage are printed on the pack.
Read the label before you take any supplement, and check the product page for the format, pack size and price before you buy.
