Vegan Multivitamin: what a vegan claim has to rest on

A vegan claim covers nutrient sources, excipients and the capsule shell. How to check it on the label, not the front.

The claim covers the whole capsule

A vegan statement is not about the nutrients alone. It has to hold for every component: each nutrient source, every excipient, any coating or glazing agent, and the capsule shell.

That is why the word on the front of a pack is only a starting point and the ingredients list is the thing you actually read.

Where the sources usually differ

Several common supplement ingredients exist in both animal derived and plant derived versions, and the label names which one is used.

  • Vitamin D3 from lichen rather than from lanolin
  • Capsule shells of plant cellulose or pullulan rather than gelatin
  • Omega sources from algae rather than fish
  • Carrier oils, which the ingredients list names
  • Colours and glazing agents, some of which are animal derived

Vegan and gluten free are separate statements

Gluten free is a regulated claim about cereal derived gluten content. Vegan is a statement about animal derived ingredients. Neither implies the other.

A pack can honestly carry one and not the other, so read both lines rather than treating a plant based pack as automatically free of anything else.

Reading the panel behind the claim

The suitability wording sits near the ingredients. The amounts sit in the nutrition panel, with mineral rows stated as elemental content and a reference percentage beside each nutrient.

So a vegan multivitamin gets compared the same way as any other multivitamin: row by row, in matching units.

Capsules and counting

This pack is 60 capsules. That is a count of capsules and not a number of portions, because the portion comes from the label.

Compare it with other packs on unit count and pack price together, then read the portion on the label for a per portion price.

What the label tells you

The full ingredients list, the amount per portion, allergens, dietary suitability, directions and storage are printed on the pack.

Read the label before you take any supplement, and check the product page for the format, pack size and price before you buy.
