Psyllium Husk Powder: comparing fibre content per portion

A 300 g psyllium pouch compared properly: fibre stated per portion, and why the label owns the mixing instructions.

What is actually in the pouch

Psyllium husk powder is the milled husk of the psyllium seed. A single ingredient pouch should show exactly that in its ingredients list and nothing else.

Anything additional, such as a flavouring or a sweetener, has to be declared, so a long list on a single ingredient product is worth a second look.

Fibre is declared per portion

Fibre content belongs in the nutrition information against the stated portion, usually alongside a per 100 g column. The per portion figure is the one that makes two pouches comparable.

Pouch weight is not fibre content. A 300 g pouch states how much powder you bought, not how much fibre a portion contains.

  • Fibre per stated portion, which is the comparison figure
  • Fibre per 100 g, useful for comparing powders of different pouch sizes
  • Portions per pack, which turns weight into value

Mixing instructions come from the label

Psyllium has specific preparation and liquid instructions, and those are printed on the label and in the manufacturer's directions. A buying guide is not the right place to read them from.

Follow the pack in front of you. If a pouch has no directions printed on it, that is a reason to ask the seller rather than to improvise.

Psyllium and inulin are not interchangeable

They are different fibres, so their labels carry different information and their preparation instructions are different as well.

Comparing them by price per 100 g treats them as the same product. Read each label on its own terms, then decide which one you are actually shopping for.

Warnings and storage

Fibre powders often carry specific warnings and storage wording. Both are label fields, and both should be present and legible before a pack goes in a basket.

What the label tells you

The full ingredients list, the amount per portion, allergens, dietary suitability, directions and storage are printed on the pack.

Read the label before you take any supplement, and check the product page for the format, pack size and price before you buy.
